In the last post I mentioned something about flying planes. Yes.
I have realized that I've left some fairly big news out, though many of you already know.
It's a bit convoluted, but the gist is that the Navy is short on general medical docs. It's in a conundrum about what to do about that. So it scratched it's little sailor-capped head one day and thought of the brilliant idea of yanking military medical officers out of their training, in the middle of residency, sticking them somewhere Navy couldn't find a full-fledged GM doctor, and telling them: "wear your white coat. No one will notice". Technically, since residents are doctors and competent enough to treat "general" maladies like colds and high blood pressure, they will do in a pinch, thought the Navy. They can get around to finishing their training and specialization later.
This little vacation from residency is open to all volunteers! And most people who decline the offer are signed up anyways. (Goody! Thought Navy. It's almost like a draft! Always loved that!) The bad thing about this interesting plan is that careers have to be put on hold for a few years, and that people can get used to the easy-peasy 9-5 life of a regular doctor, and then be thrust back into the nastiness of residency, doomed to experience the ultimate bad-trip flashback. It also means that while they are serving as a regular doctor, they can be deployed like one. Yikes.
But the good thing is that it offers a break from the residency lifestyle for awhile, and that there are some cool options. For example, J was accepted into a flight surgery program. Which means that he will get to spend 6 months learning to fly planes before being stationed somewhere to treat pilots. Especially if you have ever been an 8-year-old boy, you have to admit that sounds pretty cool.
To make a long story not short at all, as it turns out what this means is that we are moving!
In truth, I think J would have really preferred to just get residency over with, like ripping off a super-glue reinforced band-aid. But we have always said that we would move as much as we could, and this seems like it could be a good opportunity for him. Plus. We get to go to Florida.
Have I mentioned that things look like this around here?
Florida sounds pretty nice about now. We'll be in Pensacola, right by the beach. You should visit! I'll even put a little umbrella in your drink! We will only be there for the 6 months that J is playing Top Gun, and then we will find out where we go next. But since we will be moving next September, we'll be there just in time to NOT have to shovel snow next winter. I can drink an umbrella-embellished toast to that!

Congrats to the two of you. I loved the flight docs. They generally have no residency program at all so the fact that he has had some is a true benefit. Not only that, he gets to fly at least once a month I think and take tests probably once a year to ensure he is current. Its funny. When you find out where you will be let me know... Im very excited for you all.
